🗓️ A visit long overdue
It’s been a place that I’ve been wanting to visit for a longer period of time. Despite I’ve been told that it’s a really touristy destination I decided it was time to be a tourist in my country of some sort.
Giethoorn is a picturesque village in the province of Overijssel, Netherlands, known for its charming canals, thatched-roof cottages, and serene atmosphere. Often referred to as the “Venice of the North,” Giethoorn is unique in that there are almost no roads in the old part of the village, and most transportation is done by boat, bike, or on foot.
It was an unforgettable cycling tour through the beautiful region known as the Kop van Overijssel. With clear skies, a pleasant temperature of around 22°C, and a gentle breeze, the weather was perfect for exploring the Dutch countryside on two wheels.
⭐Historical Highlights
- Giethoorn – Known as the “Venice of the North,” Giethoorn is famous for its idyllic waterways and charming thatched-roof cottages. Founded in the 13th century by peat farmers, the village remains car-free, making it a peaceful place to pass through by bike or boat.
- De Weerribben-Wieden National Park – This expansive wetland is one of the most important in Europe. Shaped over centuries by peat harvesting, it is now a paradise for birds, rare plants, and cyclists alike.
- Blokzijl – A small historic harbor town that played a vital role in the 17th-century peat trade. Its beautiful harbor and old merchant houses are perfect spots to take a short break and soak in the atmosphere.
🌳Nature and Landscape
Much of the route meandered through lush green fields, quiet forests, and alongside mirror-still lakes. I experienced gentle elevation changes, with a total ascent of about 208 meters and descent of 214 meters, just enough to keep the ride interesting without being too challenging.
💭Final Thoughts
The Kop van Overijssel is a cycling gem that combines history, culture, and nature. Whether you’re gliding past ancient peat bogs, exploring cozy villages, or simply enjoying the tranquility of endless waterways, this region has something for everyone. With favorable weather and a well-planned route, it turned out to be one of the most memorable rides of the summer.
