Now as you know or may not know I like being outdoors and besides cycling I also like to go on hikes. In early summer (or as soon as the weather is up for it) I’m planning on going on a hiking trip to Luxembourg together with my buddy Nick to tackle the renowned Müllerthal Trail, also known as Luxembourg’s “Little Switzerland.”
It’s the first time for the both of us that we are going to do a multiday long-distance hike so it’s pretty exciting. With its diverse landscapes, charming villages, and challenging terrains, it promises to be an unforgettable adventure. But before setting foot on the trail, preparation is key—for both body and gear.
For the next couple of months we are going for a couple of long-distance day hikes with all our gear so that we know what to expect. These mini-adventures will help us fine-tune our gear and assess our readiness for the Müllerthal Trail.

The first trip to the Voornes Duin was a cold (around 0°C) but fun first hike of 16,5 KM.
Dialing in the Gear
Hiking gear can make or break an expedition. We’ve spent weeks researching and assembling our kits—backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, and of course, hiking boots. The next couple of day hikes will reveal whether we’ve made the right choices or if adjustments are needed.
Here’s a glimpse of what we’ll be testing:
Backpacks: Ensuring they’re comfortable for long hours and evenly distribute weight.
Footwear: Breaking in our hiking boots and testing socks to prevent blisters.
Clothing Layers: Checking the versatility of our base layers, mid-layers, and rain gear.
Sleep Systems: Setting up tents and evaluating sleeping pads for comfort and insulation.
Cooking Gear: Trying out lightweight stoves and experimenting with trail meals.
Physical preparation is just as crucial as having the right gear. While Nick and I both enjoy hiking, a multiday trek requires stamina, endurance, and resilience. The trial hike will allow us to gauge how our bodies cope with carrying loaded backpacks over varied terrain. It’s also an opportunity to refine our pacing and discover the snacks that keep us energized.
Looking Ahead to the early Summer Adventure
The Müllerthal Trail offers a mix of scenic paths through forests, rocky formations, and cultural landmarks. To fully enjoy the experience, preparation is essential. This weekend’s trial hike in Oostvoorne and Rockanje will provide valuable insights into our gear, fitness levels, and any adjustments we need to make.
As the summer approaches, I feel a growing excitement for this adventure. The trial run is just the beginning, but it’s a vital step in ensuring that Nick and I are ready to take on the Müllerthal Trail and create memories that will last a lifetime. Stay tuned for updates as we progress toward this incredible journey!
