A Fairy-Tale Castle in the Heart of the Netherlands
Kasteel de Haar, also known as Huys te Haer, stands as the largest and most luxurious castle in the Netherlands. Located near Utrecht, it captivates visitors with its rich history and stunning architecture. In this article, we delve into the enchanting story of this magnificent structure.

A Rich History
The castle’s story began in the 1300s, but much of what stands today is thanks to Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt and his wife, Baroness Hélène de Rothschild. In the late 19th century, the couple commissioned architect Pierre Cuypers – also responsible for Amsterdam Central Station and the Rijksmuseum – to restore the ruins of Het Huys te Haer. The result was a magnificent neo-Gothic masterpiece, complete with towers, turrets, and ornate details. Originally built in the 14th century, Kasteel de Haar has undergone numerous transformations. Over the centuries, it faced periods of decline; however, significant restorations have preserved its grandeur. Notably, the castle’s revival in the late 19th century marked a new chapter in its storied existence.
